Hi everybody, and welcome to our blog!
Emily and I (I'm Dave) have been friends for almost 30 years! So when Emily told me that she was driving from Kitchener, Ontario to Gibsons, British Columbia, and asked (half-jokingly) if I wanted to go along for the ride, she wasn't really expecting me to say yes. But I did! My only condition was that we go via the U.S. so we could go to a few places I have always wanted to see, but have never had the opportunity, like Mt. Rushmore and Yellowstone. So that's what we're doing! Both of us enjoy getting off the beaten path, and we're really looking forward to our trip.
Here's our planned itinerary:
June 28 - I take the train from Montreal to Kitchener
June 29 - We drive to Muskegon, MI, and spend the night there
June 30 - We take the morning ferry across Lake Michigan to Milwaukee. We then make a beeline through Wisconsin and Minnesota to South Dakota. We will try to get as close to Badlands National Park as we can that day.
From then on, exactly what days we end up where kind of depends on how fast we travel, and how much time we take to see the sights. What we want to see is:
July 1 - Badlands National Park, Mt. Rushmore, Devils Tower (Wyoming), and head towards Billings, Montana
July 2 - Take the Bear Tooth Highway from Billings to Yellowstone.
July 3 and 4 - Continue touring Yellowstone
July 5 and 6 - One last pass at Yellowstone (yes, we realize that we'll only be able to skim the surface) and drive like crazy towards Seattle.
We're planning on arriving in Gibsons sometime on the 6th or 7th.
Doesn't that sound like fun?

Are you nuts, going to Yellowstone over a major summer holiday? You will spend all your time in traffic and will have a bad taste of the place. Find a place to stay NOW because July 4th is probably the busiest time of the year at Yellowstone. Good luck!
Not much choice, Jeff, that's when Emily needs to travel to B.C. But I did take your advice and make reservations for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. They're a bit pricey, but it's a once-in-a-lifetime thing.
This sounds like fun - I wish I could had join you on the way back to Gibsons. But I can't, but the places you want to see are awesome and are on my to do list, before I die.
Drive safe.
Take lots of pictures...
Dave do you own a lap top?????
I hope you can post every day...
Yeah, Marty, this is one to scratch off our Bucket Lists!! We intend to drive carefully, and trust that others on the road will too! Dave will be bringing a laptop, I have my digital camera, and you will get to see ALL the pictures when I get to Gibsons!! but we hope to post every day whenever possible... how many hotspots are there in South Dakota? or in Yellowstone Park for that matter? LoL
Well, we'll do a posting for every day, that's for sure. It just might not be posted the day we write it. But all of the places we've already booked to sleep have free internet, so I think we should be able to post most days.
It sounds like quite an ambitious undertaking! I hope the volcano under Yellowstone doesn't blow until you are out of there. Seriously, you will vow to get back there again sometime just to see some of the stuff you should have seen but didn't have time for.
Bon voyage :-) !! J'ai hâte de voir les photos !!
