Leaving Canada

Emily had a lot to do on Sunday morning before we left, because she wanted to come home to a clean house. So we didn’t end up getting away from Kitchener until after 3:00. In the meantime, I had discovered that the photo card reader that I had bought was defective, and managed to lose a couple of photos, as well as ruin a 2 GB photo card. So this meant stopping off at Best Buy before we hit the road, and picking up a new photo card and reader. And then we were off!

Emily drove through the beautiful scenery of Southern Ontario, and we crossed the border at Sarnia/Port Huron. The view from the bridge crossing the St. Clair River was lovely. The wait at the border wasn’t too bad, and we were soon driving in Michigan. Driving the wrong way, it turns out. I took over the driving after we crossed the border, and apparently missed a turnoff somewhere, and ended up driving south on I-94 instead of west on I-69. Emily eventually realized the sun was in the wrong place, and then saw a sign that said we were on I-94, so we pulled off and looked at a map and got headed in the right direction. We probably lost an hour or 45 minutes due to that stunt. But we eventually got back on the right track, and arrived at our motel in Muskegon by 10:30.

The motel was inexpensive. That’s about it. Their website said they have free wireless internet access, which, as it turned out, was not true. They are having their wireless internet access installed tomorrow. So that’s why we didn’t post anything yesterday!

This morning we got up early and headed off to the ferry. It’s a gorgeous day, and I’m writing this blog entry on the ferry, as we head to Milwaukee. All we can see is water in all directions. It’s hard to believe we’re in the middle of the continent!

The Lake Express is a high-speed catamaran, and the crossing takes about 2 ½ hours. The water was a bit choppy at first, but it has calmed down some now that we’re in the middle of the lake. The captain came on the loudspeaker and said it would get smoother as we approached the western shore of Lake Michigan.

So far we’re having a great time! Now, as soon as we find a hot-spot, we’ll upload the blog entry, as well as a picture or two.

Whew! I can finally go to bed. I've been up for 2 days waiting for this post.
